Dans la méthode de soudage sous protection gazeuse, le gaz neutre utilisé est l'hélium ou l'argon. Les Américains utilisent l'hélium qu'ils trouvent dans certains gisements de gaz naturel. Les européens, quant à eux, utilisent l'argon qu'ils extraient de l'air où il se trouve dans la proportion de 1/100 comparativement à l'hélium qui lui aussi s'y trouve, mais dans la très faible proportion de 1/200 000.
